Is soy sauce halal?
The ingredients are halal, but naturally brewed soy sauce contains a little alcohol made by fermentation. Kikkoman says its brewed soy sauce is under 2% alcohol by volume. Scholars differ on whether that matters, so a halal-certified bottle, such as Kikkoman's halal-marked Tamari in Europe or its BPJPH-certified sauces in Indonesia, is the safe choice.
Last checked November 2, 2026. Muzzmi describes the standards and where views differ. It does not give religious rulings.
Where the alcohol comes from
Traditional soy sauce is made by fermenting soybeans and wheat with a mould, then with yeast and bacteria in brine for months. The yeast produces alcohol as a by-product, the way it does in bread dough, and some of it stays in the finished sauce. Kikkoman UK says its naturally brewed soy sauce contains alcohol from fermentation, under 2% by volume.
Some brands also add alcohol as a preservative, which is a different matter: check the ingredient list for alcohol or ethanol. Cheaper chemically produced soy sauce, made from hydrolysed soy protein, is not fermented and usually has no alcohol.
What scholars say
Many scholars allow fermentation by-products in food when the amount is small, the product cannot intoxicate and no alcohol was added as an ingredient, the same reasoning applied to vinegar and bread. Others avoid any product that measurably contains alcohol. The same split appears over vanilla extract, where the amount is much higher. Muzzmi does not rule on this: follow your own scholar, and prefer a certified bottle if you want no doubt.
Kikkoman by market
Europe: Kikkoman's Naturally Brewed Tamari Gluten Free soy sauce carries a halal seal from HFFIA, a Dutch certifier, on its EU product page. Indonesia: Kikkoman Indonesia lists its products as halal certified by BPJPH, the Indonesian halal authority. US and UK: standard Kikkoman soy sauce carries no halal mark that we found, so apply the fermentation reasoning above or choose a certified brand. Kikkoman's own pages did not answer when we checked on November 2, 2026, so recheck the product page before you rely on it.
Mirin, teriyaki and sushi restaurants
Mirin is a sweet rice wine with around 14% alcohol, added as an ingredient, so most scholars treat it like wine and avoid it. Teriyaki sauce is usually soy sauce plus mirin or sake, so it carries the mirin question. Sushi rice is seasoned with rice vinegar, which is fine, but some restaurants add mirin to the rice or the sauces. Ask what is in the glaze. How to tell if a restaurant is halal has the questions to ask, and Is Panda Express halal? covers the biggest Asian chain in the US.
How to check a bottle
Read the ingredients: soybeans, wheat, salt and water is a brewed sauce with fermentation alcohol only, while alcohol or ethanol in the list means it was added. Look for a halal mark, or for a mirin-free, alcohol-free label. Scan the barcode with Muzzmi's free label scanner to see the ingredients that matter.
Questions
Is Kikkoman halal?
Some Kikkoman products are certified: the Tamari Gluten Free sauce sold in Europe carries an HFFIA halal seal, and Kikkoman Indonesia's sauces are certified by BPJPH. Standard Kikkoman soy sauce in the US and UK is naturally brewed with under 2% alcohol from fermentation and carries no halal mark.
Does soy sauce contain alcohol?
Naturally brewed soy sauce does, as a by-product of fermentation. Kikkoman says under 2% by volume. Chemically produced soy sauce usually has none. Some brands add alcohol as a preservative, which the label lists.
Is teriyaki sauce halal?
Usually not without checking. Teriyaki is soy sauce sweetened with mirin or sake, which are rice wines added as ingredients. Look for a teriyaki sauce labelled halal or alcohol-free.
Is mirin halal?
Mirin is a sweet rice wine with around 14% alcohol used as an ingredient, so most scholars treat it like other wine and avoid it. Mirin-style seasonings without alcohol exist, so read the label.
Is tamari halal?
Tamari is soy sauce brewed with little or no wheat, and it ferments the same way, so it contains the same trace alcohol unless it is certified. Kikkoman's European Tamari Gluten Free carries a halal seal.
