Is vanilla extract halal?
Scholars differ. In the US, pure vanilla extract must contain at least 35% alcohol. Many scholars, including Darul Iftaa Chicago, allow it in cooking and baking because the alcohol is a solvent, is not made from grapes or dates, mostly cooks off and does not intoxicate. Others say to avoid it and use alcohol-free vanilla.

Why vanilla extract has alcohol
The US FDA standard for vanilla extract requires at least 35% ethyl alcohol, which pulls the flavour out of the beans. Many other flavourings ("natural flavours") also use alcohol as a carrier in small amounts.
The two views
Permitted: Darul Iftaa Chicago says vanilla extract is permissible when the alcohol is not from dates or grapes, is used as a solvent rather than drunk, and the finished food does not intoxicate. Many Hanafi scholars apply the same reasoning to other flavourings.
Avoid: other scholars say any alcohol used in food should be avoided where there is an alternative. IslamQA (answer 177030) discusses vanilla soaked in alcohol in that light. Muzzmi does not rule on this: follow your own scholar.
Alternatives
Alcohol-free vanilla flavouring (made with glycerin), vanilla powder, vanilla bean paste without alcohol, or whole vanilla pods. Muzzmi's free label scanner flags alcohol on ingredient labels.
