Are Starburst halal?
Not the original US chews. American Starburst Fruit Chews list gelatin, and in 2010 Wrigley said it was beef gelatin that was not kosher. UK Starburst Fruity Chews are made to a vegan recipe with no gelatin. We found no halal certification for either version.
Sources checked October 23, 2026. Muzzmi describes the standards and where views differ. It does not give religious rulings.
US Starburst
The US Starburst Original Fruit Chews label lists corn syrup, sugar, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, citric acid, dextrin, gelatin, apple juice concentrate, modified cornstarch, natural and artificial flavors and artificial colours. The label does not say where the gelatin comes from.
In 2010, Wrigley told the Vegetarian Resource Group that Starburst contained non-kosher beef gelatin. Sourcing may have changed since then. Most halal certifiers accept beef gelatin only from halal-slaughtered animals. More in Is gelatin halal?.
UK Starburst
UK Starburst Fruity Chews list glucose syrup, sugar, palm fat, fruit juice concentrates, acids, modified starch, dextrin, flavourings, lecithin, colours from anthocyanins and beta-carotene, and spirulina extract. The pack says suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
With no gelatin or carmine, UK Starburst avoid the main halal concern of the US chews. The pack still carries no halal certification, and the flavourings are not broken down.
Canada and other Starburst products
We found no halal statement from Mars Wrigley for Starburst in Canada. Starburst gummies, minis and seasonal lines use their own recipes, so a vegan or gelatin-free claim on one does not carry over to the others.
