Is Hershey's chocolate halal?

The classic Hershey's Milk Chocolate bar lists only sugar, milk, chocolate, cocoa butter, milk fat, soy lecithin, PGPR and natural flavor. None of these is meat-based. However, we found no halal certification from Hershey for its US bars, and the label does not explain the natural flavor.

What is in the bar

The US label for the Hershey's Milk Chocolate bar reads: milk chocolate (sugar, milk, chocolate, cocoa butter, milk fat, lecithin (soy), PGPR, natural flavor). It contains no gelatin, no animal fats other than milk fat, and no listed alcohol.

The label does not say what carrier the natural flavor uses. Some vanilla flavours use alcohol as a carrier, as Nestlé Canada says of its own KitKat flavour.

Country differences

We found no halal statement from Hershey for its chocolate in the US, Canada or the UK, where Hershey's bars are mostly imported. A kosher mark on a Hershey's pack follows kosher rules, which are not the same as halal rules.

How Muslims approach it

Some Muslims eat uncertified chocolate when the ingredients are plant-based or dairy and contain no alcohol. Others choose only certified bars. Scholars differ on flavour carriers and on ingredients whose source is not stated.
