Are Doritos halal?

It depends on the flavour and country. US Nacho Cheese Doritos contain cheese made with enzymes the label does not source, and Frito-Lay told a vegetarian group in 2014 that Doritos cheese uses animal enzymes. UK Tangy Cheese Doritos are labelled suitable for vegetarians. We found no halal certification for Doritos in the US or UK.

US Doritos and cheese enzymes

The US Nacho Cheese label lists cheddar and romano cheese made with milk, cultures, salt and enzymes, plus whey, buttermilk and other dairy. The enzymes are not described as animal or microbial.

In 2014, Frito-Lay nutrition specialists told the Vegetarian Resource Group that the cheese in Doritos does contain animal enzymes. Scholars differ on cheese made with animal rennet. Some accept it even from animals that were not slaughtered Islamically. Others accept only microbial rennet or rennet from halal-slaughtered animals.

Non-cheese flavours

In the same 2014 report, a Frito-Lay representative said none of the natural flavors in any Doritos product were animal-based. The group found Spicy Sweet Chili free of animal-derived flavors, but Salsa Verde used natural chicken flavor and Jacked Ranch Dipped Hot Wings contained chicken fat and broth. Frito-Lay's US help site has a page on which Frito-Lay snacks are halal: Frito-Lay help site.

UK and Canada

UK Doritos are made by Walkers. Tangy Cheese lists whey powder, cheese powder, buttermilk powder and flavourings, and the pack is labelled suitable for vegetarians, which rules out animal rennet and meat-derived ingredients. That is not a halal certification, and the label does not say whether the flavourings use alcohol.

We found no halal statement from Frito-Lay for Doritos in Canada. For any flavour, you can check the ingredients with Muzzmi's free label scanner.
