Are Cheetos halal?

US Cheetos Crunchy and Flamin' Hot both contain cheddar cheese made with enzymes, and the label does not say whether the enzymes are animal or microbial. The UK sells different Cheetos, such as Twisted Sweet and Spicy, which are labelled suitable for vegetarians. We found no halal certification for Cheetos in the US, UK or Canada.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Muzzmi describes the standards and where views differ. It does not give religious rulings.

US Cheetos

US Cheetos Crunchy list enriched corn meal, vegetable oil, whey, cheddar cheese (milk, cultures, salt, enzymes), salt, maltodextrin, natural and artificial flavors, whey protein concentrate, MSG, acids and colour. Flamin' Hot also contains cheddar with enzymes, whey, buttermilk, yeast extract and natural flavors.

The enzymes may be animal rennet or microbial, and the label does not say which. Scholars differ on cheese made with animal rennet. Some accept it even from animals that were not slaughtered Islamically, while others accept only microbial or halal-slaughtered sources.

UK Cheetos

Walkers brought Cheetos Twisted and Cheetos Crunchy to the UK. UK Cheetos Twisted Sweet and Spicy list corn, rapeseed oil and a seasoning of sugar, acids, flavour enhancers, flavouring, fructose, soy sauce powder, salt, onion, hydrolysed vegetable protein, garlic and colours. The pack is labelled suitable for vegetarians and lists no cheese.

A vegetarian label is not a halal certification, and the flavourings are not broken down.

Canada and how to decide

We found no halal statement from Frito-Lay for Cheetos in Canada. Frito-Lay's US help site has a page on halal snacks: Frito-Lay help site.

Because recipes differ so much between countries, read the bag you are holding, or check it with Muzzmi's free label scanner.
