Is KitKat halal?

It depends on the country. Nestlé says its Australian-made milk chocolate KitKats are halal certified. Nestlé Canada does not arrange halal certification and says KitKat vanilla flavour uses an alcohol carrier that is removed. US KitKats are made by Hershey, and we found no halal statement for them.

US KitKat is made by Hershey

In the US, KitKat is made by The Hershey Company, not Nestlé. The label lists sugar, wheat flour, cocoa butter, chocolate, lactose, palm and palm kernel oil, skim milk, milk fat, soy lecithin, PGPR, vanillin, salt, yeast and baking soda.

None of these is meat-based. We found no halal statement from Hershey for KitKat in the US.

Canada and the UK

Nestlé Canada says it does not currently arrange halal certification in Canada. It says the vanilla flavours in its KitKat and Coffee Crisp use ethyl alcohol as a carrier, that the alcohol is removed in production, and that there is no alcohol in the finished product. It also says its locally made confectionery does not use rennet.

UK KitKat 4 Finger is made by Nestlé UK in York and is labelled suitable for vegetarians. We found no halal statement from Nestlé UK for KitKat. Nestlé UK also sells a vegan KitKat, certified by The Vegan Society since 2021.

Where KitKat is halal certified

Nestlé's New Zealand help page says the plain milk chocolate KitKat range made in Australia is halal certified. In other markets, look for a halal logo and check where the bar was made.

Scholars differ on alcohol used as a flavour carrier. Some accept it when it evaporates or cannot intoxicate in the final food, while others avoid it unless the product is certified. To check any KitKat wrapper, use Muzzmi's free label scanner.
