Are Oreos halal?

Classic Oreo cookies list no meat, gelatin or lard, and UAE authorities found no animal fats in lab tests. However, they are not halal certified in the US, Canada or Europe. Oreo's UK site says most European Oreos are still suitable for a Muslim diet, with five named exceptions.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Muzzmi describes the standards and where views differ. It does not give religious rulings.

US and Canada

The US Oreo label lists enriched flour, sugar, palm oil, soybean and/or canola oil, cocoa, high fructose corn syrup, leavening, salt, soy lecithin, chocolate and artificial flavor. None of these is meat-based.

Answering a customer on X, Oreo said its cookies were not halal certified in the US and Canada, and that certification depends on the country. Its advice is to check the current pack.

UK and Europe

Oreo's UK FAQ says Oreos made in Europe are not halal certified, but that their make-up and production process do not make them unsuitable for a Muslim diet. It names five exceptions: Oreo Strawberry Cheesecake, Oreo Choc'o Brownie, Oreo Enrobed Milk and White, Oreo Cadbury Coated and Oreo Crunchy Bites Dipped.

The same FAQ says Oreo products are suitable for vegetarians, and that many are suitable for vegans but may contain traces of milk.

The pork rumour and other countries

In 2023, the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment rejected viral claims that Oreos contain pork or alcohol. It said lab tests showed no ingredients of animal origin such as grease or fat. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority said there was no substantiated evidence of non-halal ingredients.

Mondelez told The National that it gets halal certification through external agencies and decides what to offer market by market. Some countries do get certified Oreos, so look for a halal logo, or check the ingredients with Muzzmi's free label scanner.
