Are Skittles halal?

Current US and UK labels for standard Skittles list no gelatin or other meat-derived ingredients, and the UK version is labelled suitable for vegans. We could not find a halal certification from Mars for Skittles in the US, UK or Canada, so many Muslims decide based on the ingredients.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Muzzmi describes the standards and where views differ. It does not give religious rulings.

The gelatin question

Older Skittles did contain gelatin. In 2010, Wrigley told the Vegetarian Resource Group that Skittles were reformulated in early 2009 to remove it.

The current US Skittles Original label lists sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, citric acid, tapioca dextrin, modified corn starch, natural and artificial flavors, artificial colors, sodium citrate and carnauba wax. It lists no gelatin and no carmine.

UK and Canada

UK Skittles from Mars Wrigley Confectionery UK are listed as suitable for vegans and vegetarians. The colours are E162 (beetroot red), E163 (anthocyanins), E170, E160a, E100, E132 and E133, with carnauba wax as the glaze. Carmine (E120) is not on the list.

We found no halal statement from Mars in Canada. Skittles gummies and other spin-offs use their own recipes, so read each pack rather than assuming it matches the original.

Flavourings and how to decide

The labels say natural and artificial flavors but do not say what carrier the flavours use. Some scholars accept small amounts of alcohol used as a flavour carrier when it is not from wine and cannot intoxicate in the finished food. Others avoid it unless the product is certified.
