Where to buy a halal turkey for Thanksgiving 2026

Turkey is a halal bird, but a supermarket turkey is not zabiha. Buy a certified halal turkey from a brand such as Crescent Foods, which HMS lists as certified for turkey, or from a local halal butcher, and order early: Crescent's shop says orders placed after November 15 are not guaranteed to arrive by November 27.

Last checked November 2, 2026. Muzzmi describes the standards and where views differ. It does not give religious rulings.

Can Muslims eat Thanksgiving turkey?

Yes. Turkey is a bird that Muslims may eat, and nothing about the holiday changes that. What matters is how the bird was slaughtered. A standard supermarket turkey is processed on a line with no Islamic slaughter, so it is not zabiha. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and halal turkeys sell out early, so this is the week to order.

What makes a turkey halal

The slaughter, not the bird. A zabiha turkey is slaughtered by a Muslim who says God's name and cuts the throat so the blood drains, the same rules as for chicken and beef. Certifiers then check the plant. HMS, the Chicago based certifier, lists Crescent Foods as certified, with turkey among the products covered. What is zabiha? explains the rules.

Certified halal turkeys you can order

Crescent Foods sells a halal hand-cut young turkey, whole, and its shop ships within the US. On November 2, 2026 its whole turkey page said that orders placed after November 15 are not guaranteed for delivery by November 27, so order in the first half of November. Prices and dates change: check the shop page before you pay.

Other brands sell halal turkeys through halal grocers and butchers. Ask the shop which certifier covers the bird, then check that certifier's own list, as explained in Halal certifiers compared.

Hand-cut vs machine slaughtered turkey

Crescent Foods describes its turkey as hand-cut, and HMS certifies hand slaughter only. Some other halal poultry is machine slaughtered, which some Muslims accept and others do not. If it matters to you, ask the seller which certifier stands behind the bird and read that certifier's standard. Hand vs machine slaughtered sets out who accepts what.

Find a halal butcher near you

Local halal butchers and grocers take turkey orders in November, and many sell Crescent or other certified birds. Muzzmi lists halal grocers and butchers by city, with the halal status and certifier for each: Chicago, Houston, New York, or find your city. Places on the HMS certified page are on HMS's own list.

Hidden non-halal sides

The bird is only part of the meal. Packaged stuffing and gravy can contain pork fat or non-halal chicken stock, marshmallows and jelly desserts usually contain gelatin, and some recipes call for wine or bourbon. Read the labels, or scan the barcode with Muzzmi's free label scanner. Is gelatin halal? and Is vanilla extract halal? cover the two questions that come up most in holiday baking.

Questions

Is a Butterball turkey halal?

A standard Butterball turkey carries no halal certifier's mark that we know of, and a turkey without a certifier's mark should be treated as not zabiha. Look for a bird with a certifier's mark on the pack.

Is Crescent Foods turkey hand cut?

Yes. Crescent Foods sells its whole young turkey as halal hand-cut, and HMS, which lists Crescent as certified, accepts hand slaughter only.

Who certifies Crescent Foods turkey?

HMS (Halal Monitoring Services), the Chicago based certifier, lists Crescent Foods on its certified list with turkey among the products covered. Check the HMS entry for the current list of products.

When should I order a halal turkey?

In the first half of November. Crescent's shop says orders placed after November 15, 2026 are not guaranteed by November 27, and local halal butchers take orders on a first come basis.

Are halal turkeys sold at Costco or Walmart?

We could not confirm a halal certified turkey at Costco or Walmart for 2026. If a store stocks one, the certifier's mark is on the pack. Halal grocers and butchers are the reliable source.
